Wow, was that concert amazeballs or what? Awkward or Awks (phrase) Acronym for As Typically a positive thing. Often used with “totes.” That outfit is totes adorbs. WARNING: Parents, unless your goal is to totes embarrass your teen and yourself, don’t actually use these words! If you’re not convinced you won’t sound ridiculous, just reread the intro paragraph written by a 40-something-year-old. You’ll notice three common trends: 1) shortening words, 2) blending two words together, and 3) using texting abbreviations in everyday language. Here’s a list of some common slang words used by teens in 2014. Not only will it help you understand what your teen is talking about, you’ll probably earn some mad props from her as well.
So, if you feel like you’re going cray cray listening to your teen talk, it’s probably a good idea to hone up on her terminology in the same way. Now, if you were off to Italy for a vacay, you’d probably cram in several Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone Italian lessons before you went so you could understand some of the native language-or at least learn enough words so you don’t feel like a total hot mess. Once you’re successful at getting your teen to open up to you, you’re still at risk of not being able to understand what the heck she’s talking about.
